7/15/2014

Picture
Today in Spanish class the children learned the names for a few special garden creatures. Mr. Seth created special garden friends to bring to class.  La hormiga (ant), la oruga (caterpillar), la mariposa (butterfly), and la mariquita ( lady bug).  The campers enjoyed making their own artistic butterflies.  What a great way to explore art in nature during Spanish class.

Today was the last day of learning about India in Spanish class.  The children learned that the national flower for India is the water lily and they also got to see more beautiful clothing brought in by the Jan family. We learned a lot about India this month, from the foods and spices, to the special celebrations, clothes, and what India looks like.  What a beautiful country and wonderful people.  Thank you to all of our families that helped make this month's learning special by bringing in clothes and jewelry.

We learned all about the wonderful spices and foods from India. We even got to look at some beautiful clothing. Ms. Simone made a delicious pot of "chai" tea, which is a tea that they drink in India.  It has lots of spices in it and milk and sugar.  We also had pieces of flatbread. Yum! We got to see what some of the spices that they use to cook with in India like, cinnamon, ginger, black pepper, and cloves. We also learned that in India the families like to entertain and they look at entertaining as a sign of honor and respect.  The foods and spices from India have influenced many countries around the world.  We had lots of fun and would like to thank the Lakhoo family for the lovely clothing.

                                                        Gracias,
                                                        Ms. Simone

This month our Spanish class will be learning all about India.  Today we were introduced to India and found out many thing. We looked at a map of India and learned that it is made up of 6 countries. Ms. Simone showed the students that women in India that are married wear a red "Bindi" or ornament on their forehead. Only the married woman are allowed to wear the red color. We also learned that the words "bangles, shampoo, bandana, and bungalow" are words that came from India in the 1800's. We would like to send a big thank you to the parents of one of our students, Mr. and Mrs. Vijayakumar.  They sent in a beautiful wedding shirt and jewelry from India for the students to see.  We always love when families share their heritage with us. We are looking forward to learning about the foods from India next week.

Our new vocabulary word for the day was "nieve" (snow).  With some still on the ground outside, we decided to bring a little into the classroom.  The children had a lot of fun and will definitely remember "nieve".  Our color of the day was negro and batman came to visit to help the children remember this color.  We also went over "formas" (shapes).  Class was fun and exciting.

                        Gracias,
                                                                  Ms. Simone

Morado (Purple) is the Color of the Day!

2/24/2014

Picture
Today in Spanish class, the color Morado (purple) was the color of the day.  The children looked around the classroom and picked out all the purple things they saw.  We then thought of spring and the beautiful butterflies that we cannot wait to see.  We learned the word for butterfly which is "mariposa".  We also counted from uno (1) to diaz (10).  We had lots of fun in Spanish class today, and look forward to seeing lots of mariposas in the spring.

                                                          Gracias,

                                                            Ms. Simone

Feliz Ano Nuevo! Happy New Year!  We had our first Spanish class of the new year and we learned about many interesting and fun things.  We are learning about the 5 senses and today we talked about the sense of touch.  Our word for touch is "tocar".  The children practiced being able to identify soft and hard things by touch.  We sang. We laughed and had lots of fun in Spanish today!

We Are Getting Ready for Las Posadas......

12/11/2013

Picture
Today in Spanish class, we made bells for our Las Posadas celebration.  Las Posadas is a Mexican celebration where people go from door to door ringing bells, singing songs, and visiting neighbors.  We prepared our bells to day, and cannot wait for Friday, when we will go from class to class singing "Feliz Navidad" and ringing our bells!

                                                                       Gracias,

                                                                         Ms. Simone
